Soviet Jews who have relatives either in the United States or in England were rounded up at least in one city in the Ukraine and expelled to Siberia without even being given time to sell their possessions, according to a reliable report received here today.
The report said that the shipment of the Jews was carried out “effectively and swiftly.” Whether similar raids on Jews were conducted in other cities in the Ukraine has not yet been established.
A State Department spokesman told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency here today that no specific information has been received from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow with regard to reports that Jews have been deported from the Ukraine to Siberia. However, it was pointed out that the American Embassy has from time to time reported rumors of such persecution to the Department. A function of the Embassy is to report such rumors to the Department, it was explained.
