Dr. Itzhak Gruenbaum, Jewish Agency treasurer who recently succeeded Dr. Israel Goldstein in that post, today resigned. Levi Eshkol, a Mapai leader, may be named to fill the position.
Dr. Gruenbaum said that he was resigning because of his inability to balance the Agency budget. However, it is believed that he did not see eye-to-eye with other members of the executive on ways and means of solving the present financial crisis confronting the Agency. It is understood that Dr. Gruenbaum had demanded that the Israel Government repay the Agency some $30,000,000 which it had borrowed. In this, he was opposed by Agency chairman Berl Locker and Mr. Eshkol.
Rabbi I.M. Lewin, Agudas Israel leader, today informed the Agency that the Agudah will agree not to carry on a separate fund drive in the United States, provided that $250,000 of the U.J.A. funds are allocated for Agudah use in Israel. These funds, which Rabbi Lewin proposed be allocated only for Agudah and not Poale Agudah projects, will be used for education, building and absorption activities.
