The four Arab states on Israel’s borders–Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Transjordan–have asked the United Nations Palestine Conciliation Commission to take the initiative and mediate differences between them and Israel, it was announced here today.

In a communique issued by the Commission following talks with Israel and Arab spokesmen, the Commission said that the Arabs are ready to consider any compromise proposals if they are put forth by the Commission.

The Commission also said that it had met with Arthur Lourie, Israel consul general in New York, and that he had been told that the members of the body were studying the Israel demand for direct negotiations with the Arab states. The Commission will reply to the Jewish demand next week.
