Fourth Annual Joint Defense Appeal Meeting Opens; National Goal is $6,800,000

American Jewish communal leaders from all states today convened here for the three-day fourth annual meeting of the Joint Defense Appeal. The J.D.A. is the fund-raising arm of the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith. The J.D.A. is currently seeking $6,826,115.

A major feature of the conference will be workshop sessions devoted to the problems facing Jewry in the major social areas of civil rights, education, community service and foreign affairs. National authorities slated to lead the workshop sessions include John Slawson, A.J.C. executive vice-president, and Benjamin R. Epstein, A.D.L. national director. The parley keynote address will be delivered by Justice Meier Steinbrink, national chairman of the A.D.L.; and major policy addresses will be made by Jacob Blaustein, president of the A.J.C.; and Judge Joseph M. Proskauer, honorary president of the A.J.C. National Commander George N. Craig of the American Legion will deliver the main address Sunday.
