President Truman has sent an autographed photograph to Larry Goldstein, 11-year-old Lynn, Mass., boy who was recently beaten up by older boys and called a “dirty Jew.” The boy, whose father was killed in action during World War II, asked the question, “Why did my daddy have to die?”
David K. Niles, administrative assistant to the President, wrote Larry: “I am enclosing a photograph to you inscribed by the President who wants you to have it as a reminder that your father’s ideals still live on in a country he died for. The real Americans are the ones like your father who fought against injustice and prejudice. If you and other young Americans will make as good a fight against injustice and prejudice, you will help the President win that fight, too.”
