The Vienna correspondent of the Manchester Guardian reported what he described as a disturbing incident at Braunau, birthplace of Hitler, during a public discussion between Austrian Socialists and neo-Nazi Independents, who won 16 seats in the national elections on Oct. 9.

When a Socialist party member recalled Nazi atrocities in the Jewish concentration camps, one member of the audience shouted, “We’ll make lampshades of your skin, tool” The correspondent commented that the fact that one of the Nazis “could voice his sentiment, shows that some people in Austria think that they can now detect a change in the political atmosphere.”
