American and Soviet diplomats were today reported to have approached the Israel Government for further clarification of a statement earlier this week by Premier David Ben Gurion challenging the authority of the United Nations to establish an international regime in Jerusalem on the basis of the partition resolution of Nov. 29, 1947.
Pavel Yershov, Soviet Minister to Tel Aviv, called on Dr. Walter Eytan, director-general of the Foreign Ministry. It is reliably reported that James G. McDonald, American Ambassador to Israel, also visited Dr. Eytan today for an explanation. It is expected that other diplomats will follow suit.
The establishment of the Israel legation at Ankara has now been completed, it was announced today. In addition to Eliahu Sassoon as Minister and Uriel Heyd as counsellor, Tuvia Arazi has been appointed counsellor in charge of press relations and consular affairs, with headquarters at Istanbul. J. Ben. Jaacov was named second secretary. The legation staff will leave for Turkey the latter half of December.
