The U.N. Trusteeship Council today decided, by a vote of 6 to 1 with 5 abstentions, to begin immediate work on carrying out the decision of the General Assembly to place Jerusalem under international trusteeship.
The vote was taken following a statement by Ambassador Roger Garreau, president of the Council, urging the delay of immediate action on the Jerusalem decision until the January meeting of the Trusteeship Council. His suggestion was supported by the American, British and Mexican members of the Council, but opposed by the representatives of France and Iraq.
The Council will hold its first meeting on Jerusalem on Thursday morning behind closed doors. It will be decided at that meeting as to whether the future sessions should be open or closed.
In Washington, Aubrey S. Eban, permanent delegate of Israel to the United Nations, called on Undersecretary of State Dean Rush. They held what was described as a general exchange of views on Israel’s situation arising out of the recent U.N. General Assembly session.
The prediction that a special extraordinary meeting of the U.N. General Assembly will be necessary this spring for the sole purpose of dealing with the Palestine issue was made here last night by a high official of the U.N. Secretariat. Such an extraordinary session is “a foregone conclusion” in view of the refusal of both Israel and Transjordan to recognize the internationalization of Jerusalem except for the Holy Places, the official said. His views were shared by several members of the Trusteeship Council.
