Jewish leaders here, upon studying more carefully the text of the new Greek electoral law, established that the new legislation does not actually abolish the so-called “electoral ghetto” for Salonika Jews but merely reaffirms the abolition of a clause in that law which stipulates that the Jews in Salonika must have separate constituencies. The clause was originally repealed in 1935.
The “electoral ghetto” clause, which provides that the Jews in Salonika must vote at separate polling places, still remains under the new law. Leaders of the Jewish community today emphasized that they will make strong representations to the government and will insist that the discriminatory measure be repealed.
