Government Inquiry Committee Opens Hearings on Religious Education in Israel Camps

An Israel Cabinet committee of inquiry today began hearing witnesses testify on the disputed subject of religious education in immigrant reception camps in this country. Immigration Minister Mosha Shapira, a leader of the Religious Bloc, declared that the issue of religious education in the camps was a stumbling bloc to formation of a wider coalition Cabinet.

A total of 483 Jewish immigrants arrived in Israel yesterday aboard the Rumanian vessel Transylvania and the Israel transport, Kedmah, Approximately 2,000 immigrants arrived last week, while the number of immigrants living in reception camps remains at nearly 84,000, it was reported here. Two thousand immigrant children who were evacuated from the camps as a result of the torrential downpour are now housed in private homes.
