Israel Must Become Strong Sea Power to Protect Trade and Nation, Ben Gurion Says

Israel’s security and economic well-being depend on its becoming a strong naval power in the Middle East, Premier David Ben Gurion declared last night at exercises at which 16 new naval navigation officers received their commissions.

The Premier pointed out that Israel’s only links to the rest of the world are the sea and air lanos and that therefore “one of own main tasks is the conquest of the seas in order to safeguard exports, imports and the tourist trade. ” He also declared that despite Israel’s efforts peace with the Arabs is still not near.
