A spokesman for the Costa Rican embassy here today refuted charges by the World Jewish Congress that there was an anti-Jewish campaign in progress in Costa Rica, explaining that there have been “certain particular issues” in which Jews have allegedly “taken advantage of the hospitality” extended them.
Asserting that there is no religious discrimination in Costa Rica, the spokesman said that Jews were granted hospitality and entered the country as “agricultural people.” However, after they entered the country they switched to “commercial practices and the situation has been getting worse and worse” in the last ten years. “All this trouble is caused by an excess in commerce,” he added.
