Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie of the British Empire arrived here today and was welcomed at the airport by representatives of the South African Board of Jewish Deputies and other leading Jewish organizations and institutions.
At a meeting with representatives of the Jewish press, Rabbi Brodie, who has just completed a tour of Kenya and Rhodesia, reported that the question of shechita–Jewish ritual slaughter–was “acute” in those areas, as was the problem of Sabbath observance. The British Chief Rabbi said that the shortage of trained rabbis in outlying areas in the British Commonwealth could be met by the institution of the system of “rotating rabbis” among small communities.
