A serious conflict in connection with the May Day celebrations in Israel threatens to divide members of the Histadrut–the Israel Federation of Labor–following a decision adopted today by the Tel Aviv Workers Council prohibiting the holding of a separate Mapam (left-wing) demonstration and barring the display of all portraits.
The latter prohibition was directed against the Communist Party, which traditionally carries banners displaying Soviet Premier Josef Stalin’s portrait. The Mapam, although rejecting a proposal for a joint demonstration with the Communists, will protest the Workers Council’s decision.
