Itzhak Shamai, a Jew, and Mohamed Elkader Matari, an Arab, were found guilty today of espionage following a prolonged trial in the Tel Aviv Court that had been conducted behind closed doors.
When permission was granted to the accused to state their case, the Jewish defendant rose and first related his life history, claiming that at one time he cooperated with the Haganah and later established contact with the Irgun Zvai Leumi. Both defendants later pleaded guilty to the charges directed against them. A verdict is expected to be announced tomorrow.
