The question of the possibility of changing the status of the Chief Rabbi of Istanbul and of the Chief Rabbinate was discussed here today by the new Lay Council of the Rabbinate.

The council appointed a special commission to study the problem and report back with a proposed solution. The status of the Chief Rabbi has not been changed in the past 80 years, while the office of Chief Rabbi has not been filled for the past 18 years. It is expected that a change of status in the post may bring more candidates into the field.
