Vice-President Alben W. Barkley last night warned members of the National Conference of Christians and Jews that forces in the world today “threaten to undermine the foundations of our unity at a time when we cannot afford the luxury of entertaining bigotry, intolerance and narrow-minded feuds about men and women who do not believe as we do.”
Barkley told the group of more than 300 that there is “still much more to be accomplished” in the area of tolerance and understanding. “There never was a time in the history of our nation when we needed greater unity than at this hour,” he said. Secretary of Interior Oscar L. Chapman was cited by Barkley for his “contribution to the survival of freedom in our time.”
