A stiffening attitude by Rumanian authorities toward Jews leaving for Israel was reported here today by some of the 1,086 Rumanian Jews who arrived aboard the S.S. Transylvania.
They reported that last minute searches were made of the belongings and persons of all emigrants and that 20 were ordered to remain. The searches were so thorough that even the soles of shoes were examined and new clothing, blankets and jewelry were confiscated. The emigrants also indicated that it is virtually impossible for persons holding responsible posts in the health services and economic life to leave.
