Pledges totalling $1,100,000 were made to the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York last night at the second Stephen S. Wise Memorial Dinner sponsored on behalf of the U.J.A. by the American Jewish Congress. One of the highlights of the dinner, which was attended by 400 guests, was the presentation of the Stephen S. Wise Award to Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, director-general of the Joint Distribution Committee, for his outstanding contribution to the welfare of Jewry overseas.

Aubrey S. Eban, Israel permanent delegate to the United Nations and Ambassador to Washington, who was the chief speaker, declared that the “Arab states’ refusal to make peace makes it all the more urgent to end the policy of one-sided rearmament which has operated in favor of the very party which refuses a peace settlement.” Rabbi Irving Miller, president of the A.J.C., reported on the progress of Kfar Sh?uel, Israel agricultural village which was established as a memorial to the late Rabbi Stephen Wise.
