Israel Premier David Ben Gurion was asked this week-end by the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada to prevent the importation of non-kosher meat from the United States to Israel.
The Union sent a cable to the Premier declaring that the American rabbinate is “profoundly shocked” at reports from Israel that the Ministry of Supply has decided to import non-kosher meat. “This act constitutes a gross abuse of our religion,” the cable said.
Meanwhile, the Rabbinical Council of America, an Orthodox body, has announced that a delegation of rabbis, representing the Council, has departed for Israel to study the religious needs of new settlers in the Jewish state and the facilities for the religious education of children. Following their return to this country after the summer, the delegation will report its findings to the executive committee of the Council, which represents 500 Orthodox congregations in the U.S. and Canada.
