Considerable consternation was aroused here over a statement by a high government official that Canada is prepared to accept as immigrants thousands of Ukrainians who served as members of a Nazi-organized Ukrainian division which formed part of the German Army in World War II.
Prior to his joining this division — which was known as the S.S. Galician division — each member had to take an oath to fight against the Jews. A photostatic copy of the text of this oath was reproduced in a local newspaper which reported the wartime activities of the division.
Members of this division are said to have participated directly in the German Army and Gestape mass annihilation of Jews. The division was formed by the Nazis on Soviet territory and after the fall of Hitler’s regime the entire division surrendered to the U.S. Army. Most of the members of the Ukrainian Division are now in England expecting to be admitted as immigrants into Canada.
It was also reported here from Ottawa that the Canadian Government is considering the admission as immigrants of about half a million Volksdeutsche from Europe.
