Dr. Albert A. Berg, noted surgeon, philanthropist and former president of the International College of Surgeons died here this week-end. He was 77 years old.
For almost half-a-contury one of America’s outstanding surgeons, Dr. Borg was a pioneer in abdominal surgery. He was one of the surgeons who developed the radical operation for stomach and duedenal ulcers. He was a founder of the International College of Surgeons, which he served as president for four years, from 1943 to 1947.
It was Dr. Berg’s large but unannounced gift last year to the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, which made possible the purchase of property in New York for the construction of a seven-story building which will become the U.A.H.C.’s headquarters. Dr. Berg provided funds in 1944 for the construction of a research laboratory at Mt. Sinai Hospital. In 1940 he gave the New York Public Library a collection of 3,000 rare old books and the $2,000,000 W.T. Howe collection of 16,000 volumes of English and American 19th century literature.
