The South African Jewish Board of Deputies today announced the appointment of a seven-man delegation to the Conference of Jewish Representative Bodies of the British Commonwealth which will take place in London from July 16 to July 28.

In a statement, the Board makes it clear that its acceptance of the invitation to attend the conference is not to be construed as an ondersement of any suggestion for the creation of a new Commonwealth body. At the same time, the Board emphasizes that it attaches great importance to the proposed discussions at the parloy on the subject of coordinating the activities of Jewish organizations working in the international field.

“The Board is not committed to the establiahment of a single unified organization which would speak for all the Jewish communities outside of Israel,” the statement said. “At this stage it is not certain that such an organization is cither practicable or desirable. On the other hand, there is no doubt that the present situation, in which so many parallol, sometimes competing, bodies function independently, is altogether unsatisfactory.”
