Air Alert Sounded in Jerusalem; Haifa Welcomes American Cadets; Displays Israel Flags

An air alert was sounded here today by the Israel military authorities without a subsequent public explanation. All traffic was halted during the alent.

Police officials told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that the alarm was meroly a test. It had been announced earlier that a number of such tests will be made within the next fortnight. The population took today’s alort caluly.

In Haifa flags were displayed in grecting to 321 American merchant marine cadets who arrived on the training ship Empire State to spond a week in Israel. The city is giving a reception for the cadets, about 15 percent of whem are Jewish. Israel officials are also arranging tours for the cadets throughout the country.

The summer session for American students at the Berl Katznelson Institute at Kfar Saba was inaugurated today at coremenies attended by leading Israel educaters, writers, labor loaders and statesmen. Among the speakers, who spoke of Israel’s great need for scientific workers, were Laber Minister Golda Myerson and Acting President Joseph Sprinzak.
