A total of 7,500 Jewish youngsters were admitted last year to Youth Aliyah (immigration) institutions, according to Moshe Kol, Youth Aliyah director for the Jewish Agency. Some 17,000 youths are now receiving care in Youth Aliyah institutions, he added.
Although plans for the admission of a similar number of youngsters this year are in operation, Mr. Kol said, children above the age of 14 will not be accepted owing to budgetary difficulties. The Jewish Agency’s Youth Aliyah budget last year totalled $10,500,000, of which about $1,120,000 was obtained through loans. Mr. Kol said he is considering conducting separate Youth Aliyah campaigns in all countries where united Israel drives are under way. He lauded the work of Hadassah, which allocates a large portion of its funds to Youth Aliyah.
