Rabbi Max Kirshblum, executive vice-president of the Mizrachi Organization of America, declared today that “no one can conceal the fact that the general economic situation in Israel is considerably worse than it has ever been before.” The people of Israel anxiously anticipate “more than the usual amount of financial support” from the American Jewish community through the United Jewish Appeal, the impending Israel bond issue and private capital investments, he added.

Rabbi Kirshblum, who attended the extraordinary economic conference of American Jewish leaders in Jerusalem, added that he was “compelled to mention the earnest and challenging problems which have arisen for religious Jewry in Israel in wake of the arrival of thousands of religious immigrants from the Moslem world. Unfortuntely certain elements in Israel actually deny them free religious expression.”
