President Truman was told this week-end by Jacob Blaustein, president of the American Jewish Committee, that “the people of Israel definitely want democracy and do not want any form of totalitarianism either from within or without.” In a visit to the White House, Mr. Blaustein reported on his recent trip to Israel, assuring the President that Israel is “the best friend America over had in the Near East.”

Mr. Blaustein said that he visited Israel President Weizmann at Berne, Switzerland, and that Dr. Weizmann asked him to convey personal regards to Mr. Truman. A more complete report will be made to President Truman by Mr. Blaustein next Thursday when the Jewish leader again sees the Chief Executive. Today Mr. Blaustein only briefly reviewed the political, economic, and social situation in Israel.
