The 1949 literary prizes offered annually by the Louis IaMed Foundation here for the advancement of Hebrew and Yiddish literature were awarded to Rachel Korn, Eliahu Lipiner, Aaron Zeitlin, Hillel Bavli and S.Z. Zetzer, it was announced here today. Each of the winners received a $500 prize.
Mrs. Korn, of Canada, and Mr. Lipiner, of Brazil, were honored for works in Yiddish, the former for a volume of verse entitled “Barshertkeiten” (Preordinations), and the latter for a book called “By the Waters of Portugal,” which deals with the Spanish Inquisition. The Hebrew literature awards went to Mr. Zeitlin for his work, “Songs and Poems,” and to Mr. Bavli for his translation into Hebrew of Shakespeare’s “Anthony and Cleopatra.” Mr. Zetzer, essayist and scholar, was honored for his contributions to the literature of both languages.
