H. Cynowicz, India Zionist leader who just completed a week-long visit to Jewish communities in the Malabar area, on India’s south-west coast, reported today that the most important problem facing the Jews in that sector is emigration.
About 100 of the 2,000 Cochin Jews living in the Malabar area have already reached Israel, and the remaining members of the community are swaiting the opportunity to proceed to the Jewish state. The Jews of Cochin, who are dark-skinned and resemble the Yemenite Jews, have been living in India for some 2,000 years. A mass transfer of Jews from Cochin and the other communities in Malabar to Israel is expected to be started soon.
Mr. Cynowicz said that crowded meetings were held in Malabar at which Jews could hear his reports on the establishment of Israel and on life in the Jewish state. The Jewish communities which Mr. Cynowicz visited include Cochin, Ernakulam, Mala Parur and Chennamangalam, which is the seat of the Malabar Zionist Association.
