Two tons of household silver and art objects of the same metal is awaiting restitution to its rightful Jewish owners from whom it was confiscated by the Nazis in 1938, it was learned here. The owners must present a receipt issued by the Hamburg authorities who confiscated or be able to present a detailed description of their property before it will be returned to them.
The 4,000 pounds of silverware is part of some 20 tons of Jewish property stolen by the Nazis under instructions from Hermann Goering. The Hamburg authorities were able to prevent this part of the loot from going forward to central collection depots by claiming that it had to be catalogued and handled differently in order to save from destruction important cultural objects.
