S.Z. Shragai, Poale Mizrachi leader and coalition candidate of the Religious Bloc and the General Zionists, is assured of election as Mayor of Jerusalem despite the fact that he was tied with former Mayor Daniel Auster in the last formal vote in the municipal council.
At that time, the count was nine to nine, but Mr. Shragai and two General Zionists abstained while awaiting the outcome of the Nathanya elections where General Zionist Mayor Oved Ben Ami had the support of both groups. Meanwhile, the Nathanya elections were postponed again today. In Petach Tikvah and Rehovoth, where no single candidate in either city received the required majority, the balloting was postponed until tonight.
In Ramat Gan, another satellite city of Tel Aviv, the former Mayor, Abraham Krinitzi, was re-elected. He was the candidate of the General Zionist Party. A General Zionist mayor, I.M. Grushkevich, was also elected in Kfar Motzkin. In the following towns Mapai candidates were elected to head the municipal administrations: Holon, Dr. H. Kugel; Lydda, Pesach Lev; Kedera, David Berman; and Kfar Saba, A. Keren. Histadrut candidates–Mapai and Mapam in coalition–were elected in Tiberias and Mehariya. They were M. Weill and Gershon Tatz, respectively.
