The Central Committee of Liberated Jews in the French zone of Germany will cease functioning at the end of next month, it was learned here today.
Only 50 Jews remain in that zone of the 2,500 Jewish displaced persons who lived there during the post-war period. At present Constance is the only Jewish community existing in the zone. It counts a membership of only 40. During the last year, the work of the communities in the French zone was concerned mainly with obtaining compensation payments for Jewish victims of Nazi persecution.
Advance payments of 25 percent of the amount due to displaced Jews were made by the Wuerttemberg authorities, while Southern Baden granted 75 percent of the recognized claims to displaced Jews who proved that they were about to emigrate. A total of 200,000 German marks was thus disbursed among the Jewish DP’s who left for Israel, the United States and other countries as soon as they obtained their compensation payments from the authorities.
