A wage dispute between labor and management has resulted in the complete closing down of 20 of Israel’s metal plants and restricted production in ten others. After 500 metal workers had gone on strike for higher wages, the industry’s manufacturers association decided to close down the 20 plants keep them closed until the Government intervened to have the strike called off.
The problem was studied by the Israeli Cabinet last week and a Cabinet committee of three was appointed to investigate the situation and seek to establish better relations between workers and employers in the industry. Full support to the workers was pledged today by the Histadruth, Israel’s Federation of Labor. Mapai, the Labor Party, also sent a message of encouragement to the strikers. Histadruth officials predicted that the crisis in the industry may continue for a month. Fifteen hundred was employed in the industry are now affected by the strike and lockout.
