One of the two Jewish hospitals in Budapest nationalized last year when the government took over all privately-maintained hospitals has been returned to the Jewish community. This is in line with a new policy which also returned one hospital each to the Catholic and Protestant churches.
The institution, which was formerly an old age homes and a sanatorium for incurables with a bed capacity of 320, will continue to serve that function, but 80 of the beds will be assigned for general hospital purposes. The diet will be strictly kosher. Much of the necessary medical equipment is lacking and communal authorities hope to obtain assistance from the Joint Distribution Committee to purchase it.
