Chancellor Figl of Austria was asked today by Jacob Blaustein, president of the American Jewish Committee, to take “vigorous measures” to punish the policemen in Salzburg who attacked Jews during a demonstration against the showing of the film “Immortal Beloved” produced by Veit Harlan, who directed the Nazi anti-Semitic film “Jew Suess.”
In a cable to the Austrian Chancellor, Mr. Blaustein said that observers of the American Jewish Committee in Salzburg reported that more than 30 Jews were injured, about 12 seriously, during the peaceful demonstration when police attacked the Jews with clubs. “Such action is contrary to the democratic principles of free expression of opinion and throws an unfavorable light on the future of democracy in Austria,” the cable said.
