Ambassador Abba S. Eban, who collapsed from over-work on Friday at a meeting of the U.N. Security Council, was reported today to be ”resting and rapidly recovering.” He fainted shortly before the Security Council adopted 10 to 0, with Russia abstaining, a resolution ordering Israel to suspend immediately all drainage work of the swamps in the demilitarized zone of the Huleh area.
In his fight against the resolution, Ambassador Eban pointed out to the Security Council that the resolution is an insult to Israel. He spoke for an hour against the resolution while it was in the making and on the same day continued to speak against it before it was taken to a vote. He felt faint and had to leave the session just before the resolution was voted. A doctor established that he was suffering from nervous exhaustion.
An Israeli official here today said that the adoption of the resolution by the Security Council was ”clearly an appeasement of Syrian aggression.” A feeling of resentment against the Council’s adoption of the resolution was also felt in American Zionist circles.
