Taking into consideration the serious position of the Jews in Hungary, the Australian Government has forwarded to the British Legation in Budapest a number of immigration permits to be issued to Jews who have relatives in Australia, it was learned here today.
The action was taken following representations made to the government by the Federation of Jewish Welfare Societies in Australia. Leaders of the federation pointed out that the only way to rescue the Jews who are now being deported from the larger cities in Hungary is to permit their immigration to other countries where they have relatives and will not be a burden on the community. The federation was later notified that the Department of Immigration has agreed to give preference in immigration visas to Hungarian Jews who have close relatives in Australia.
