George N. Shuster, American Commissioner for Bavaria, was today reported to have told Bavarian Chief Rabbi Aaron Ohrenstein that he could not be tried by an American court on charges of being involved in restitution irregularities.
The report added that the Commissioner told Rabbi Ohrenstein that he “must be satisfied with German court proceedings.” Rabbi Ohrenstein recently asked for an official inquiry into his activities following rumors linking him with Dr. Philip Auerbach, former Bavarian restitution director, who is charged with financial irregularities while in office.
Meanwhile, it was reported that Auerbach’s trial would open in August and that the preliminary phases of the proceedings would be completed before the middle of August. It is considered likely that Rabbi Ohrenstein will be charged at the sametime.
