The Senate Foreign Relations and Military Affairs Committees met behind closed doors today to consider the House approved Foreign Aid Bill, which contains grants to Israel. A spokesman for the committees said the two groups probably will spend at least three or four days on the measure before clearing it for final Congressional action by the Senate.
The House trimmed about one billion dollars off the measure last Friday night, although aid to Israel was left intact. The bill calls for a $50,000,000 grant to aid Jewish refugees coming to Israel. The section providing military and economic funds for the Middle East includes a $23,500,000 provision for Israel. There is an attempt in the Senate to slice another billion dollars from the bill. It is not yet known how this will affect the aid-to-Israel portion.
(In New York, Louis Lipsky, chairman of the American Zionist Council which is interested in securing American grant-in-aid for Israel, today said that the action of the House last Friday “is a renewed and welcome expression of American goodwill to Israel.”)
