Representatives of the Joint Distribution Committee from 22 countries began their fifth annual conference here today with a global review of J.D.C. activities. The conference will plan expansion of J.D.C. work for the aged, ill and handicapped in Israel, economic reconstruction for Jews in the Moslem world and child-care and feeding programs as well as stepped-up campaigns against TB. trachoma and other diseases.
Moses W. Beckelman, J.D.C. director-general for overseas operations, is presiding over the conference which will continue until Thursday. A delegation of American leaders including Edward M.M. Warburg, chairman of the J.D.C. and general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal from which the J.D.C. receives its funds, Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice-chairman; Brig. Gen. Morris Troper, of the J.D.C. administrative committee; Dr. Abram Abeloff, of the J.D.C. health committee, and Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, executive vice chairman of the U.J.A. will participate in the planning of programs for relief, reconstruction and resettlement for the coming year.
J.D.C. appropriations for the first nine months of 1951 were $16,400,000. The agency allocated $12,000,000 in the past two years for its “Malben” program in Israel.
