Vice President Alben W. Barkley told 1,000 New England leaders of the United Jewish Appeal here today that “Israel, a sister democracy of the United States, whose message of freedom rings out throughout the Middle East, is confronted today with a critical situation arising out of the tidal waves of immigration engulfing its shores.”
In a plea for maximum support of the special $35,000,000 drive launched by the U.J.A., the Vice President declared that the people of Israel “are tightening their belts to the danger point in order to keep the gates of their country open to scores of thousands of their uprooted co-religionists.” He urged the American people “to advance the cause of democracy and strengthen the bulwark of freedom that is Israel by supporting with generosity, and even with sacrifice, the current campaign of the United Jewish Appeal.”
Checks and commitments to the total of $1,122,000 were presented to Mr. Barkley by the conference which adopted measures to speed local drives and pledged support of the extraordinary nation-wide campaign.
