President Peron has “great faith and conviction that Israel is destined to occupy an important place in the international panorama of nations,” Dr. Pablo Manguel, Argentine Ambassador to Tel Aviv, said in a press conference here today. After citing instances of Argentine aid to Israel, he declared: “Israel knows that it can count on us. Our assistance is constantly apparent.”
He declared that the Jewish community in Argentina is secure in its political rights and will have a candidate for Congress in the next elections. The new Argentine Constitution, he added, will make racial discrimination a grave offense punishable by imprisonment. Asked why President Peron had received the Arab terrorist leader Fawji el Kawkazi, Dr. Manguel said that Kawkazi had come to Argentine on a Lebanese diplomatic passport, bearing a gift for President Peron from the President of the Lebanon, and had been presented by the Lebanese envoy.
Dr. Manguel was the guest of honor tonight at a reception tendered by the American committee of the Weizmann Institute of Science at the Ambassador Hotel. Dewey Stone presided.
