The possibility that the Mapai Party will join with the various religious parties in a narrow coalition government, banking on the Progressives not to oppose such a government on a vote of confidence in Parliament, was reported here today. However, the Mapai general council and the members of the party’s Parliamentary group are meeting here tonight to take final action on the General Zionist demands for joining a Mapai-led government.
A Mizrachi spokesman today declared that his party had protested bitterly to Premier David Ben Gurion last week when it was reported that the Mapai and the General Zionists had agreed on a uniform national education system which the religious parties feel would discriminate against them. This attitude is one of the factors which may affect a Mapai-Orthodox coalition.
