Agudist members of the Israeli Parliament will vote against the granting of a special status to the Jewish Agency which would enable it “to intervene in the domestic affairs of Jewish communities outside Israel,” H.A. Goodman, political secretary of the World Agudist Organization, told a meeting of its European executive. He said that the Agudist movement and “Orthodoxy the world over” reject the attempt of the Jewish Agency to obtain special status in Israel.
The Agudist official declared that the statement by Dr. Nahum Goldmann, co-chairman of the Jewish Agency, that that body would become the representative and spokesman of the Jewish people in all matters concerning Israel and that all organizations seeking to operate philanthropically in Israel must seek Jewish Agency approval was “diametrically opposed” to Premier David Ben Gurion’s assertion that there would be no change in Israel’s policy of welcoming the support of all Jewish groups and individuals.
