Striking ships’ officers here and in Haifa today voted against returning to their posts unconditionally, as demanded by the Histadrut-sponsored maritime union. Instead, the officers discussed the possibility of negotiating for a return to work after all striking seamen had received assurances that they would get their former jobs back again.
Thousands of workers responded to a Histadrut call yesterday to rally in the streets of Haifa to prevent another demonstration called in support of the striking seamen by the Mapam and Communist Parties. The heavy rains were responsible in part for the cancellation of the Mapam-Communist demonstration and the other workers attended a Histadrut meeting where Aba Choushi, Haifa Mayor and secretary of the Haifa Labor Council, explained the Histadrut stand on the maritime strike.
