About 20 percent of the visas issued to displaced persons during the last hectic rush before expiration of the United States Displaced Persons Act at midnight on December 31 went to Jewish refugees, Henry Levy, emigration director of the Joint Distribution Committee, said here today. He praised American consular officers, D.P. Commission officials and International Refugee Organization workers for their intensive efforts to help as many DP’s as possible receive visas.

The J.D.C. official said that the displaced persons who received visas just before expiration of the act must sail for the United States before the end of April. The I.R.O., which ceases operations on January 31, has guaranteeed to provide passage for DP’s until that date, Mr. Levy declared. Beginning February 1, he said, it is hoped that refugees with visas who had not previously departed for the United States will be transported by the newly-formed provisional intergovernmental migration body.
