Erich Lueth, initiator of the “peace with Israel” movement in West Germany, was today cleared in a Hamburg court of charges of having engaged in pro-Nazi activities before and during World War II. Witnesses in behalf of Lueth, a West German Government press official, testified that he had carried on activities against the Nazis.
In the course of the hearing, the judge remarked on Lueth’s campaign against Veit Harlan, producer of the Nazi anti-Semitic film “Jew Suess,” and suggested that the Bonn official should either come to terms with the producer or “leave him alone.” Lueth retorted that “it wouldn’t hurt this country if the German courts did some worrying about Harlan.”
