The butchers’ strike here, which lasted two months, was called off today after the government agreed to increase the price of meat to meet demands of the butchers.
Despite the fact that the strike lasted eight weeks, it passed nearly unnoticed since no meat was distributed to the population. This week one-quarter of a pound of meat was rationed to each person and it is thought that there will be three more distributions between now and Passover which begins early in April.
