Shaban Foundation Announced by World Congress for Jewish Culture

The World Congress for Jewish Culture today announced the establishment of a Shaban Foundation for Jewish cultural purposes which will distribute six annual awards for the best works each year in Jewish painting. children’s literature and for the best essays on the relationship between Israel and Jewish communities in other countries.

The Foundation has been established at the Congress by Abel Shaban and his wife Sarah, of Johannesburg. A total of $1,500 will be awarded each year by jurors named by the administrative committee of the Foundation which is composed of Jewish personalities from the United States, South Africa, Argentina and England. Mr. Shaban, formerly a publisher of a Jewish newspaper in Johannesburg, is one of the leading Jewish figures in South Africa and plays a prominent role in international Jewish organizations.
