The 1,000th shop operated by a disabled immigrant with the assistance of a loan from the Joint Distribution Committee was opened near Lydda yesterday. The store, a grocery, was opened by Doussa Janach, 31-year-old father of four children, who suffers from a chronic heart condition and a partly-paralyzed leg.
Since its inception in 1949, Malben, the J.D.C.’s welfare organization in Israel, has granted loans for similar purposes totalling over $688,000. In addition, Malben maintains 14 “sheltered workshops” for over 300 men and women–former hospital patients learning new skills under the supervision of trained rehabilitation technicians.
